The Zingaro Nature Reserve

Riserva dello ZingaroBetween San Vito lo capo and Scopello, along the cost called by the Greek and Latin “Cetaria” because of the big quantity of tuna into the sea. In the mountains, where lots of birds live and built their nest, there is the Zingaro nature Reserve, one of the most famous in Italy.
The symbol of the Reserve is the “Palma Nana”, the first was born in Sicily in the ancient age. With the law n.98 (6 of May 1981) the Sicily Region set up the Zingaro nature Reserve, saving the cost (7km) and about 1.700 hectares of wild nature.
We don’t know why this area is called “Zingaro”; we don’t have any news about the old people who lived here, we just know that a little colony of lombard people in the XIII century.
It’s quite impossible to describe the nature in the long cost: is full of little bays, with pebbles. The sea is characterized by a variety of colours, just people who see this amazing scenery can appreciate it. The rocks are like walls between the bays and there are a huge amount of rabbits hidden in this rocks. This is the perfect place for people who are looking for a timeless nature, where past and present are mixed, have to visit this fantastic Reserve.
You can just get into the Reserve on foot, because nothing has to disturb the variety of spicies of birds (for example the eagle of Bonelli, the Poiana, the Nibbio, the Gheppio) and the fauna. There are lots of rare plants which grow up here and are characteristic of this area as well. The trees are really old and huge, there are typical species as Carrubbi, Olivi, Frassini, Sughero. The most frequent plants are the Euforbia and the Lentisco.
The Zingaro Reserve is well known thanks to its blue sea, its peaceful bays, its lightful bottom of the sea. But Zingaro is not just this.
Reserve ZingaroMoreover in this Reserve there are a lot of mountains (no more than 1000metres). Above the cost there are still rest of eight thousand years ago life for example the Uzzo cave. Nowadays within the cost there are clear evidence of a recent country life. A specific area is dedicated to the cultivation using the old traditional methods.
It’s really easy to get here, there are three classical routes: the first along the cost is the most attended and the easiest as well. The second is a zig zag route it’s a bit more challenging. The third is more interesting for people which are into sports, it goes across the whole reserve.
There are little paths and places where everyone can take a rest, and in some of these places you can stay overnigh too. There are just few rules: do not get dirty, do not pollute, do respect the sea, land and ski.
To get near to the cost by boat there is a limit (300 metres) which you can’t overcome.
