From Erice to Custonaci following the traces of an ancient pilgrimage.

A thin thread, full of faith and tradition, passes through the lands of the Agro Ericino

Among the various paths that cross the Erice territory, there is one that is particularly suggestive for the beauty of its panoramic views, but also for its close connection with the religiosity of the place.

This itinerary, from Erice to Custonaci, was once traveled by many faithful and pilgrims who accompanied the sacred image of the Madonna of Custonaci.
We begin the descent from the Spanish Quarter of Erice, from the so-called Runzi side. A start that immediately offers enchanting glimpses of a breathtaking panorama. The blue of the sea, the outline of the majestic Monte Cofano... it's just the beginning of many beautiful surprises.

After passing by the ruins of Porta Castellammare and following the ancient mule track that for centuries was the connecting route between the medieval village and the Erice countryside, you reach CapoScale and then Valderice.

From here we head towards the small hamlet of Misericordia, we cross its small Park, a true environmental oasis, and we enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic points of the excursion. A terrace on the immense Gulf of Bonagia.

We continue passing by the Arco del Cavaliere, a historic stopping point used during the pilgrimage to refresh the bearers of the sacred image and finally we reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Custonaci, a place that with its beauty involves and excites.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Custonaci with its splendid tuff façade is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and dates back to the end of the 15th century. Inside, a riot of stucco and decorations frame the precious oil painting depicting the sacred image of Mary, which has drawn numerous believers here over the centuries.
