Quiet coves for nature and relaxation lovers near San Vito Lo Capo and Castelluzzo

A few kilometers from San Vito Lo Capo, about 20 minutes by car, are the most fascinating beaches on the north-western coast of Sicily: Cala Agliareddi and Cala Cuticchi . They are located at the entrance to the Riserva Naturale Orientata di Monte Cofano , a protected area that preserves intact landscapes, between sea and mountains. The two beaches are very close to each other.

Cala Agliareddi and Cala Cuticchi are white pebble beaches, immersed in a natural setting that is still less frequented than other more famous locations in the area. Those looking for a quiet destination, far from mass tourism, can find an ideal corner here to relax, read a book or take a swim in total calm.

Their Sicilian names arouse curiosity. Cala Agliareddi means “small cove or inlet” . Cuticchi instead means “rounded stones, pebbles”.

Characteristics of the two beaches

The peculiarity of this stretch of coast is its seabed. It is not sandy, but made up of pebbles smoothed by the sea. This can make the coves less comfortable for those who are not used to it, but it helps to keep the water particularly clear. The use of rock shoes is recommended, especially for entering and exiting the water without difficulty.

The sea is transparent, with shades ranging from turquoise to blue and becomes deep immediately, depending on the light and the position of the sun. The conditions are perfect for snorkeling: you can observe rocky seabeds, fish and a varied marine flora, without moving too far from the shore.

Behind the caste extends the typical vegetation of the Mediterranean scrub. Among rocks and paths there are shrubs, prickly pears and aromatic plants such as rosemary. In summer and spring the air is full of intense scents and the contrast between the green of the vegetation, the white of the pebbles and the blue of the sea creates a remarkable visual impact.

How to get there

Cala Agliareddi and Cala Cuticchi are easily reached by car from San Vito Lo Capo, following the coastal road towards the Riserva di Monte Cofano . Just before arriving in Castelluzzo, turn right onto Via Calazza. The arrival at your destination is indicated by a large sign indicating the entrance to the reserve. There is a car park on site.

Access to the Agliareddi beach is via a short path that descends towards the sea. Nothing difficult, but it is better to wear comfortable shoes to move among rocks and pebbles. A little more complicated for Cala Cuticch i which requires the descent to the sea between the rocks and also consider that there is space for few people. Not suitable for children.

Who is Cala Agliareddi suitable for?

This beach is suitable for those seeking silence and contact with nature. It is a good choice for families with children, provided they are equipped with rock shoes and everything necessary to spend a few hours at the beach, since there are no establishments or services in the area.

Trekking enthusiasts can also appreciate the position of Cala Agliareddi, as a starting point or a stop during an excursion in the Monte Cofano Reserve. The coastal path offers suggestive views of the gulf and leads to other hidden coves.

For those who practice photography, it is an interesting place especially at sunset, when the cliffs turn orange and the sea reflects the light of the sun setting behind the reliefs of the promontory.

What to bring

Since there are no services on site, it is advisable to bring water, food, an umbrella and everything you need for the day. A beach mat or a mat can also be useful, given the presence of pebbles.

Mask and snorkel are ideal for those who want to explore the seabed. Rock shoes, as already mentioned, are practically indispensable for moving safely between the rocks in and out of the water.
