Active tourism and adventure: how to insure your excursions and water sports during your holidays

When planning an active tourism trip, precautions aren't just about choosing a B&B or flight. Those who come to our region to kitesurf on the beach, dive in the reserve's seabed, or participate in major outdoor events must consider the specific risks of outdoor activities. In this case, purchasing travel insurance isn't an extra cost, but rather a guarantee of being covered in the event of an unexpected event.

Insurance for a resort stay isn't the same as insurance for someone spending their days on Monte Monaco or on a raft. Outdoor activities require broader coverage, specifically for injuries related to various disciplines.

The map of real risks in our territory

To understand the importance of travel medical insurance with sports coverage , just look at the map of our territory and the specialties that attract thousands of people every year:

  • Rescue services at Zingaro and Monte Monaco: in Sicily, unlike in some Alpine regions or abroad, the Alpine Rescue Service (CNSAS) coordinated by 118 and any helicopter rescue are entirely covered by the National Health Service, therefore free of charge for the injured party. Why is insurance necessary? Because if the injury forces you to interrupt your stay, the public health system won't reimburse you for lost hotel nights, missed flights, and most importantly, it won't cover medical repatriation (travel by private ambulance or assisted flight to your city of residence), which entails extremely high costs.
  • Climbing at Cala Mancina and Castelluzzo: Standard travel insurance policies have a fixed clause: "activities requiring the use of ropes, harnesses, and mountaineering equipment are excluded." This means that if you fall at Cala Mancina (even if you're at sea level), standard insurance won't cover private medical care or damage to equipment. You'll need a specific climbing policy, or if you're a member, check the coverage provided by your CAI membership card.
  • Kitesurfing and Diving in the Gulf (Liability): The waters of San Vito and the coves of Makari are spectacular, but personal liability insurance policies (such as "head of household") almost always exclude damage caused during towed or sailing water sports. If you lose control of your kite and hit a swimmer or other equipment, you're solely responsible for the financial loss. Specific liability insurance is required for these disciplines.

Guides, diving, and rentals: what's included and what's not?

Many adventure lovers rely on local professionals or rent equipment on site. In this case, the rules change:

  • Guided excursions: If you book a guided excursion or dive, the center's insurance only covers the guide's liability for any professional errors. It does not cover your own injuries or distractions; your own insurance is required for those.
  • Inflatable boat and equipment rental: Boats rented at the port include third-party liability insurance, but any material damage caused to the vessel (such as breaking the propeller on rocks or scratching the hull due to inexperience) is always the customer's responsibility and will be deducted from the deposit. No standard travel insurance policy covers damage to rented marine engines.
  • Equipment theft: If you're traveling with your own technical equipment (boards, sails, ropes), remember that standard insurance policies only cover luggage lost at the airport. If your equipment is stolen from a car parked near cliffs or beaches, you'll need specific supplemental theft coverage.

The big outdoor events

San Vito Lo Capo tourist information: find hotels, B&Bs, holiday homes

San Vito Lo Capo is an international destination, especially in autumn and spring

The most important event is the Eco Trail dello Zingaro, held annually in March. This running race has a main route of 16 kilometers and over 700 meters of elevation gain. The route follows technical single-track trails, paths, and inclines that start at sea level and run entirely through the Zingaro Nature Reserve.

October sees the San Vito Lo Capo Sprint Triathlon, a high-level competition that annually sees over 250 athletes compete in a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer cycle, and a 5-kilometer run.

During these events, checking your personal insurance coverage—or that included in your registration for individual races—allows you to focus on the competition and avoid unpleasant surprises in the event of an injury.
