The designation of Gibellina , elected unanimously, as the first " Italian Capital of Contemporary Art " for 2026 is an extraordinary recognition that underlines its great commitment to the field of art.
This small town in the Belice Valley, reborn after the 1968 earthquake thanks to the far-sighted vision of Mayor Ludovico Corrao, has today become a cultural bastion, a place where art and creativity are celebrated and encouraged.
This project, promoted by the Ministry of Culture, follows the initiative of the Italian Book Capital with the aim of valorizing peripheral territorial realities.
Of the 23 applications submitted on April 15, five cities made it to the finals: Carrara, Gallarate, Gibellina, Pescara and Todi.
Among the reasons that led to the unanimous choice of Gibellina as the Italian Capital of Contemporary Art , there are certainly: the extraordinary quality of the project, the involvement of young people and the numerous collaborations with public and private institutions of different nationalities.
This designation is a springboard for Gibellina and for the entire province of Trapani, as well as the demonstration that a city can make past, present and future coexist thanks to its artistic heritage.
Gibellina is ready to welcome artists, professionals and art lovers from all over the world in 2026, offering them a unique and engaging experience. Exhibitions, performances, workshops and many other activities will be organized, which will show the incredible diversity and vitality of contemporary art.
